“I assume you haven’t heard of knock codes,” you say to the bird. “Doubt you have much use for them. But the idea is, you knock on something in a particular way, and it gives a message. Usually this is a military thing for prisoners communicating, but there’s a few signals that lots of people know. One of them means ’emergency’, and it’s mostly used if you get stuck behind a locked door or something. Like on a ship, where you might hear a lot of incidental knocking, so this is a distinct pattern that everyone’s watching out for.”
I am not particularly interested in your mortal pursuits, the bird replies.
“Right, I should get to the point. We can follow the same idea with ether. If you send ether several times in a similar pattern, the wizard should notice and maybe she can do something on her end. Send some, short pause, send some, longer pause, short pause. Do that a few times and I think that’ll do the trick.”
The bird doesn’t seem amused, but it appears to be doing something. Maybe it’s trying out the idea?
There we go. Link established, says a familiar voice in your mind. Can I have a look through your senses?
“Go right ahead,” you say. “As long as you get me out of here soon after, I think my host is getting impatient.”
You stop seeing or hearing anything for a few moments.
Well. This is a bigger problem than I realized.
“And the mountain-bird seems to think I’m causing problems just by being here,” you reply. “So it’s best that you get me out. The bird can do it by turning me to ether, apparently, but I’m really hoping you have another way.”
Sort of. I’m not sure if it’s better, though. It’s not easy for most people to traverse the Paths Between.
“I think I’m past caring about how easy things are at this point,” you say with a sigh. “Do I need to know anything in particular about these Paths Between?”
If you fall off of it, you’ll end up in some sort of purgatory
It may take minutes, or hours, depending on how well you’re able to traverse it, it mostly depends on your mental fortitude
