She pulls a music sheet out from the folds of her robe and holds it up.

“If my first plan doesn’t work, I’ll need you to play this magically,” she says. “Can you memorize it while we’re on the move? That will speed things up considerably.”

I’m working on it. I’ll let you know if I’m having trouble, you reply.

The song doesn’t seem immediately familiar, but most of the songs you know off the top of your head are sea shanties. Those are unlikely to be used as magical melodies by a religious order. Still, the tune isn’t particularly complicated… well, it does have a few notes that humans have trouble singing, but that’s presumably why she needs it done with magic.

When you’re confident you remember it, you run through it and then check against the sheet. Just as you finish that, Kenton stops in front of a door.

“Are you ready?” she asks.

I’m reasonably confident I can do it without errors, but if you need me to be more sure than that, another practice runthrough or two would be helpful. It depends on whether time matters more than accuracy.

“It doesn’t need to be perfect,” she explains. “Just have to hit the main notes at the right times. Aside from that, what matters most is keeping the song going.”

Then I’m ready.

“Good,” she replies, throwing the door open.
