An arrow comes flying at you. But it burns up in a flash of light as it approaches.
It soon becomes clear that it’s just the first in an entire storm of arrows, most of which burn up – the light seems to be stopping them, and it’s easy for you to deflect the few that make it past with simple wind. One manages to sneak past and hit you, however, and you feel a sensation of pain.
At first you wonder if the arrows are actually spells, but as more of them come and your focus is on fending them off, the sensation passes. That’s when you realize what’s going on – this is a memory of being overwhelmed by arrows. Someone is turning it into a weapon against you.
Not a very effective one, with the light. You clearly weren’t supposed to find it – but that raises the question of just what it is, and why it’s here. It seems to be something more than a memory.
You keep following the tether, and there’s a frozen figure. The ice suggests an upright pose. Your tether goes right to them. Is this the other wizard? Or does the tether pass through it?
Stop!
You don’t know whose voice that was.
Tell me why I should, you respond defiantly.
Because I just finished gathering up their scattered ether, and that means they’ll be at full strength if you let them out, comes the reply. And then I don’t think we’ll be able to stop them from taking control of the demon.
There’s a strange lack of confidence in the voice. Not what you expected.

I’m from… further along, I suppose that’s the best way I can put it. Sorry about the arrows. This will all make sense in time, um, but I can’t really explain it now. The voice pauses for a moment. In fact, I don’t think I have time to explain much at all, so I’d best just pass on the message.
Another message? You hope it’s not “look left”. You’re not in the mood for more cryptic messages from the gods, either.
But it turns out this message is very clear in its meaning.
