“The ‘puppet’ is controlled by an ethereal ‘string’,” the wizard says. “Now, at a glance, the string doesn’t seem to go anywhere. But that’s not actually correct.”

“What, the other end is hidden or something?” you ask, more than a little confused.

“No. The other end isn’t in this time. I’m not entirely sure what that means, except that it’s going to be even harder to deal with this problem than I thought.”

He glances around.

“What do you mean, not in this time?” Mina asks. “That doesn’t make any sense! You mean it’s in the future or something?”

“Or the past, or perhaps it’s beyond time entirely,” the wizard replies. “This isn’t something I have a lot of understanding of myself. All I can tell you is, there’s something beyond the end of the string, and even with magic we don’t have the means to access it.”

“What if we pulled on the string?” you muse. “Could we maybe drag it out of there?”

“In theory, but we’d need to be very well-prepared,” the wizard says. “And with some city official not wanting people to mess around in this tower, it’s not going to be easy to make those preparations.”

“Well. You’re the wizard, so you’ve probably got the best shot at explaining to whoever it is that there’s trouble here and it involves magic,” you reply. “Meanwhile, Mina and I need to get out of here without drawing too much attention.”

You point to the keg in her hands. You especially don’t want to draw attention to that.

“Well, the Protectors are wary of you, but they’re wary of everyone,” the wizard replies. “I don’t think you’ll find that to be too much of a problem.”

As he speaks, though, he gestures to something.
