Swamped Chapter 151 Page 6

“I can get by with my sword,” you say, handing the shield over. “Focus on protecting your head and chest, that’s where blows are most likely to be fatal. If you have to, block with your arms.”

They look skeptical.

“Look, I don’t think you’ll have to deal with more than a few. I’ll try to keep their attention on me. But I can only do so much, so just keep that in mind. Oh, and if we stand back to back, that should make it harder for them to ambush us. I’ll try to match your pace.”

“In that case, I’ll go in front,” they say. “If I’m the one setting the pace, it’s best if I’m in the lead, right?”

You nod.

“Gotcha. Let’s go.”

The stranger starts walking out, holding up the shield carefully while you watch their back. You swat aside as many birds as you can, but you still get hit a few times. Nothing too serious, though you expect you’ll feel quite sore tomorrow.

“Badger? What on earth are you doing here?”

That’s Minnie’s voice, but you can’t turn around just yet. There’s still birds coming your way.

“Friend of yours?” you ask.

“Acquaintance, really,” she replies. “Good to see you, Arlene, but I wish it were under better circumstances.”

“Nah, this is about par for the course tonight,” you reply casually. “So. Either of you got any ideas, or do we just run?”

“Well, I thought of something, but I’m not quite sure how to pull it off,” the wizard replies.
