Swamped Chapter 144 Page 16

The easy thing to do would be to hide behind the costume. Except you left it on the other side of the door, because that’s where the hinges were, and the costume’s big enough that you would have had trouble turning it around.

You could make a run for it anyway, but the wizard would almost certainly see you as you passed by the door. Even if they didn’t hit you with a spell, it would make it easier for them to tell you’d crossed to the other side…

And that’s when an idea strikes you. You take the overcoat off, and cover the doorway with it. You run past the coat to get by unseen, letting it fall to the floor. Then you duck behind the costume, and peek out carefully.

The wizard steps out. They’re wearing a hooded robe, so you can’t really identify anything about them beyond their height. They glance quickly in both directions, and down at the overcoat.

Then they turn towards the costume and raise their hands. Arlene starts shouting threats through the horn, but the wizard seems completely uninterested.

You were hoping they’d be close enough you could push it over onto them, but you don’t think there’s quite enough distance. And if you pushed the costume forward, you don’t know that you’d be able to get to safety before the spell finishes.

But you don’t have a lot of time to weigh your options. You’ll need to make a move, and fast.
