Swamped Chapter 140 Page 13

If you know one thing about officers like this, it’s that they’re total suckers for flattery.

“Wait, if the dockworkers are gone, then I think the priority has to be making sure the ship is safe,” you say. “And I can’t think of anyone better suited for that than the town guard.”

“Well, obviously!” the officer says, scowling. “But most of ’em are busy! It’s not as if I can tell ’em to let a bunch of crooks have free run of the orphanage!”

The orphanage? That’s strange.

“Well, you’re here. Surely your presence would reassure the ship’s crew that they’re in safe hands, and keep them from trying anything desperate to get ashore like this fellow did.”

“We are patient by nature,” the priest says, sounding slightly annoyed, “but I must admit there are some of us very eager to get to shore. Mostly younger priests, mind you. Not fully developed in their mental discipline yet.”

“Just the sort who need an authority figure to tell them it’s all under control, right?” Long asks, smirking. “Of course, if you’re too busy to deal with that, I could take care of it for you.”

Oh, he’s good.

“That won’t be necessary,” the officer grumbles. “I’ll have a quick word with them, and when I’m done, I’ll be right back here to deal with your group.”

And he runs off, with the priest in tow. Maybe that could have gone better. But the important thing is, he’s not in your way now.

“Best that we get that last muckbeast dealt with before he comes back, hmm?” Long asks, chuckling. “Now, right this way. I’m going to need your help.”

“With what, exactly?” you ask. You know you won’t like the answer, but you think getting it over with is your best option.
