Swamped Chapter 136 Page 13

You suppose that you might as well try talking to your assailants, on the offchance they can be reasoned with. If nothing else, it might be enough to let you stall them.

“What do you want?” you ask. The only answer you get is more splashes.

So either they’re acting on raw instinct, or they don’t see any reason to bother seeking your cooperation. Well, that’s some level of information, you suppose.

Well. Maybe things will be different if you can catch one. You could probably make a crude snare out of seaweed – but a trap isn’t going to do much good if your quarry can see you making it.

You suppose you could tie the snare anyways and try to fling it behind you when you next hear splashes, but you don’t think that would work very well. But what else can you do that even has a chance of working?

Well, you could abandon the slime here and make a run for it, and hope your attackers are more interested in it than in you. That would leave some questions unanswered, though, and you have a strong sense that they’re important questions. So that’s out…

…except, perhaps, as a way to feint the attackers. Now you might be getting somewhere. The problem is, a feint doesn’t work very well if you don’t have a plan for how to follow it up.

  1. Maybe you can separate enough of the slime mass to take some with you for examination while leaving the bulk of it behind to satisfy the interlopers.
