“Well, I wouldn’t say I was expecting her, but I wouldn’t have minded running into the Laikenne woman,” Long replies. “I don’t think she’s actually who she says she is, mind. Just thought it would be fun to indulge that bit of fiction and see if she had a good tale for me about old Matilda.”
Hmm. You can’t tell how sincere he is about any of that, but you think he wanted to bring up the subject of either Minnie or Matilda. Maybe see if you had a reaction, which you probably did.
Well. Then why don’t you see what he does if you tell him more than he’s expecting you to.
“Oh, her? I ran into her earlier tonight. She seems to be on some sort of treasure hunt, but I couldn’t really make sense of what it was about.”
“Treasure hunt? During a show just before she leaves town?” Long asks. But he seems distinctly unsurprised about it.
“It looked to me like the show was a bit of a mess. Not that I really know what was going on…”
And now the gang leader is giving you a look that says maybe you should share what you do know. You think you ended up putting both your questioners on the same side.
Well. That may not be what you were trying to do, but now that it’s the situation, might as well make the most of it.
